A Rising Star In The NBA: Devin Cannady

Former Princeton Tiger, Devin Cannady, lights up the G League with Long Island Nets

Devin Cannady was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, and played college basketball at Princeton University. I first saw Devin during his freshman year with the Tigers, and was really impressed with his ability to shoot and handle the ball. This past year was his rookie season in the G League with the Long Island Nets, and he balled-out while completing his studies to graduate.

Growing up in Indiana, were you inspired by legendary hometown basketball players like Larry Bird and Shawn Kemp?

I was more inspired by the rich history of Indiana, than by any individual players.

I loved basketball from a young age – my dad got me hooked by watching Michael Jordan tapes.

The education was the biggest factor

My shooting ability has always made my transition smooth at any level.

What was it like to win the Ivy League Tournament?

It was such a great feeling winning the first ever Ivy League Tournament with my teammates.

What was it like standing on center court with an NBA champion like Kyrie Irving?

It was a humbling moment. It showed me how close I am to being at that stage, but also the amount of work I need to continue to put in.

What was your first G League game like?

My first G League game was back in Indiana where I’m from, so it was a special moment.

How can athletes bring about social justice?

Continue to use their platforms and voices to push forward policy and educate others.

What do you want to accomplish on and off the court?

Too much to put in one answer.  I’ll be working towards those things everyday, though.
